Enter creatinine, age and sex to estimate glomerular filtration with the modern race-free CKD-EPI 2021 equation recommended for adults by the National Kidney Foundation and NIDDK.
G2 — mildly decreased estimated filtration
G1 and G2 alone do not mean kidney disease: other markers of damage, such as increased urine albumin, are required. Any result should be assessed over time.
Please note: One estimate does not diagnose chronic kidney disease: abnormality must persist for at least 3 months and be considered with urine albumin. The equation is unreliable when creatinine is changing acutely.
Source: Inker et al., NEJM 2021; CKD-EPI 2021 equation: 142 × min(Scr/k,1)^α × max(Scr/k,1)^−1.200 × 0.9938^age × 1.012 for women. Use an IDMS-standardised laboratory creatinine result.
The CKD-EPI 2021 equation uses creatinine, age and sex. Creatinine is converted to mg/dL and used to estimate normalised filtration in mL/min/1.73 m² without a race coefficient.
The result falls into category G1 to G5, but eGFR should be considered with urine albumin and its trend. G1 and G2 without other markers of kidney damage do not by themselves indicate chronic kidney disease.
The estimate is unreliable when creatinine is changing rapidly and may be less accurate with unusual muscle mass, amputations, severe wasting or pregnancy. In borderline clinical decisions, a clinician may confirm kidney function using cystatin C.
